Two bits of news from your walkathon guide…
Would you like to chat about organizing a walkathon?
I presented a webinar yesterday as a guest of the groupery, called “How to Plan a Walkathon”. The audience found it to be very helpful and I loved the interactive discussion. To those that came, thanks! I am considering doing another one. They are free. If you’d like to come, please drop me a note and I’ll let you know the date and time. A webinar is a conference call where you can also see the presenter’s screen. It’s simple to dial in and can be more of a group discussion than a presentation.
Another way to communicate is to comment on this blog. I usually answer any questions there within a day.
The Walkathon Guide is a Success Story!
It’s featured in “Social Media as a Force for Good”, a new book by Chris Guillebeau and Gwen Bell. The book is all about using social media to get a message out, whether it’s for business, nonprofit, or fun. I recommend this blog as well. It’s not about walkathons but motivates you to do great things.

Someone asked about the cost of organizing a walkathon.
It depends on what all you need to cover but here is an estimate. Assume about $10 per person if you have 200 or more people, but then add the general expenses. For example, my kids school walkathon, with about 200 participants, cost just under $2000. Note that we had no facilities or police charges. Here is a break down:
Per Person: T Shirt = $5.50 at most, Lap cards, lanyards, small prizes = $2.50, Miscellaneous = $2 Total = no more than $10 per person
Fixed:
Yellow tape and cones to mark the course = About $150 for a schoolyard event
Extra trash pickup or janitorial services= ??
Outhouses = ??
Rent, borrow or purchase canopies and tables = ??
Have concessions items donated or charge for them = net profit only
Do you need to pay for facilities or police supervision = Call officials who are associated with your site
Do you need to cover insurance or is that part of a school where the insurance would be covered (check with principal)?
Other readers, if you have expenses I haven’t listed, please feel free to add a comment. Thanks, Lee
