our hockey team used http://www.raiseathon.ca to raise money for a skateathon. we do a skateaton every year and do by paper. Kids collect minimal amounts. This allowed for us to have a personalized site, and each participant or parent can register their child/themselves. And then it’s simple, you can send out email requests via email or use facebook or twitter and request donations. You can reach family all over the world. Our team/club went from raising $10,000 last year to $26,300 this year. Fantastic, no money collection all for donors to pay online via Paypal. our club set up their own paypal account so money went directly into account. And a very small one time fee, i think we paid $300 by the company and they do the hosting, send excel reports, and set up our own site. We would never do another way. so simple

We are trying to spearhead a walk-a-thon as a fundraiser for a new Heart Health Institute and Wellness Center that we will be building on 44 acres of rural property here in West Branch, Michigan. We would be very interested in receiving an ebook as well.

Hi Katie,
Your proceeds can vary greatly, from $100 to $500,000 or more. One way to figure it out is estimate how many people would show up, and then how many donations people would realistically be able and willing to raise. If you think you could interest 200 walkers, and each walker raises $200 in donations, that is $40,000. Your cost might be $10 or $15 per walker for a T Shirt and some drinks and hot dogs, so subtract about $3000 to make $37,000. That would make a nice grant.

I am thinking about having a walk-a-thon to raise money for our foundation that gives grants for special education in schools. Can you give me a realistic idea of how much we could expect to make on a walk-a-thon?

I just have a quick question. I am currently planning my first fundraiser walkathon. Do you buy the tshirts yourself or get them donated? I love the idea of giving them to participants but not sure where or how to go about getting donations.

Hi Sharon, Regarding needing a permit, it depends on where you are having the walkathon and what the local requirements are. If you have a location and day in mind, it would be best to check with the local officials that are responsible for that location. For the walkathons we've held on school grounds, we just needed permission from the school. If you plan to use town property, you would need to check with the appropriate town officials. You had also asked about a single Synagogue holding a walkathon. I don't know of any issues with that, but it would be best to check with the leadership of your specific Synagogue. There is a lot of free information about organizing walkathons on my websites (walkathonguide.com and walkathonshop.com), but I don't have a free booklet. Our fund raisiing ministry would like t o have a walkathon to help raise funds for our own Synagogue. we are a non profit Synagogue. I would be very interested in getting the free e booklet showing and telling us how to go about doing a walkathon. I ask if we need t o get a permit?

I wrote my book, The Walkathon Guide, primarily to help volunteers like you that are faced with planning a large event like a school walkathon. I have just released version 2.0 of my book. If you go to http://www.walkathonshop.com/thebook.html and click on the picture of the cover of my book, a new window should open that will bring up the first couple chapters of the book, including the complete table of contents. This will provide some helpful information to get you started and allow you to decide whether it would be worthwhile to get the complete book.
